  • One place left: value becomes 10 times larger
  • One place right: value becomes 10 times smaller
  • ×10 <- PLACE VALUE → ÷10
Each step changes value by a factor of 10.
3Number Periods and Decimal Rule
  • Millions Period | Thousands Period | Ones Period | Decimal Places
  • Whole-number places are grouped in sets of three digits
  • Read large numbers in groups of three digits
  • The decimal point separates whole numbers from decimal parts
  • Places to the left become larger
  • Places to the right become smaller
  • The decimal point never moves

  2. Move left to make values 10 times larger
  3. Move right to make values 10 times smaller
  4. Learn place names in groups of three
  5. Say the order aloud in both directions
  6. Cover the labels and recall them from memory
53-Minute Recall Routine
  • 1 minute: Read the place names from left to right
  • 1 minute: Say them from right to left
  • 1 minute: Cover the labels and recall the order
  • Start from ones, not from the far-left column
  • Use colour to remember each number period
  • Say place names aloud in rhythm
  • Practise moving left and right by powers of 10
  • Review after 10 minutes, one day and one week
